Eat Clean! What exactly does that mean? I don't really like the word "diet". It has taken on a very negative connotation. When I think of "diet", I think of restrictive, can't, not allowed, and don't. Plus, "diet" has the word "die" in it. Hmm. Hmm. What do you think of when you hear or say the word "diet"?
When I think of eating clean, I think of purity. Purity is a positive word to me. So to eat clean means to eat purely. Purely means processed as little as possible. Purely means no junk, very little salt, even less sugar, and no flour if possible. I think those are the culprits.
But it's tough. I know it. Perhaps we should start small. For example, if you're like me and sugar is your poison, we could reduce the amount of sugar that we consume in a day. Now, I know you're thinking everything has sugar. How about decreasing the amount of sugar you put coffee or cereal from two teaspoons to one and one half teaspoons? That's a start, right? Do you have a candy bar in the afternoon? Can you switch it to a protein bar? Be sure to read the label. Some of them have a lot of sugar.
Like Mrs. Micah and Canadian Saver commented yesterday, baby steps. And as racerx said, "Better to try and fail 10 times, than to never try at all!"
P.S. Remember to make water your drink of choice!

Two Words about Nutrition

Water really is a wonder drink! I have been better this week, I used to drink a lot of diet Pepsi, but I know the stuff is bad for me. I've started filling a glass of water and setting it close to the computer, no real goal for the day, but I have noticed that I drink 2-3 of those in the afternoons and haven't even had my soda today!
I love your tip about substituting the protein bar for a chocolate bar! Most are a lot healthier and will provide a good energy boost to finish the afternoon at work.
Canadian Saver, good for you, drinking more water! Sometimes I put a lemon slice in it. It makes me feel...I don't know...wealthy!
Diet and budget both have a big negative connotation, but all either word means is a more functional lifestyle!
Cool idea about the lemon slice. I discovered the wonders of plain old tap water in a Dasani bottle while in college. Somehow having a plastic bottle (could be Aquaspring or whatever) makes me like water. I think the reason I never drank it before was that it was in glasses.
Glasses are a commitment, they mean you have to drink it all or leave it sitting open to dust and such. Or you might spill it. And they just feel weird (only with water, I'm fine with milk or Coke). Water bottles are my lemon--they make the water feel legit.
Yay psychological hacks! :)
I completely agree with you. Now if only I could put that into practice a bit more. I've been focusing on the water more lately but I think it's time to put down the Christmas cookies too!
You know...it is amazing once you literally clean all the excess sugar and salt out of your body. Your body can really tell you what it needs then. I can always tell when I need some sort of protein.
And you are so correct about the water...HUGE difference when you drink enough water. It helps me to avoid headaches, my skin loves it, and my organs just function so much better.
We have a huge garden in the summer, as well as wonderful farmer's markets. We love all the fresh produce, and try to preserve as much as we can for the cold season. I can't wait for spring!
Nice post...
I too hate the word diet. And giving up or quitting something - eg chocolate or cigarettes also sounds too negative.
racerx, I much prefer "nutrition plan" and "spending plan".
Mrs. Micah, I hear you. If I drink water from a glass, I must use a straw.
Cynthia, focusing on drinking more water is a start. I wish we could ban Christmas cookies :-)!
Dawn, I can't wait for Spring either. And I agree with you. When I am eating clean, I know exactly when my body needs protein, water, or whatever.
CatherineL, I like to think of it as changing habits.
That's a great way to look at it. I think eating natural is a great way to go about it, too. Anything with an ingredient that doesn't stand on its own as a food shouldn't be eaten. That eliminates most sodas, candy, etc. Sweet is sweet - all natural fruits can be sweeter than an artificial candy, but more importantly they'll be more satisfying.
